Lee County is located in the southeast corner of Iowa. There is no clear consensus about the origin of the name. It could be for Robert E. Lee, a confederate general during the American Civil War, or for Albert Lea; an early explorer.
The county is one of the few counties in the United States to have a dual county seat; which are Fort Madison and Keokuk. The largest city is Fort Madison.
Lee County borders Henry, Des Moines and Van Buren Counties in Iowa; Henderson and Hancock Counties in Illinois and Clark County in Missouri.
Main highways through the county include US-61, US-136, US-218, IA-2, IA-16 and IA-27.
